Alex Shelley: We’re Kind Of Hitting A Bit Of A Downward Point In Tag Team Wrestling Right Now

Alex Shelley talks the current state of tag team wrestling.

The current wrestling scene is littered with great tag teams that populate rosters in WWE, AEW, TNA, and NJPW. The independent scene is also full of great veteran tag teams, some of which are signed to the previously mentioned major promotions.

Shelley recently sat down with Busted Open Radio for a interview ahead of TNA No Surrender. Shelley was asked a hypothetical question: If had to choose, would he rather spend the rest of his career as a singles or tag team wrestler. Shelley explained that he would prefer to be a tag team wrestler before going on to express concern about the current state of tag team wrestling.

“I think we’re kind of hitting a bit of a downward point in tag team wrestling right now. You’re seeing a lot of the guys my age, we’re 40 — but they’re aren’t any true tag teams coming up to really take our place. You look at it ten years ago, FTR, Young Bucks, Briscoes, MCMG, Time Splitters, you had so many and now it’s kind of starting to dip a little bit. While it’s our responsibility to carry on that lineage, as you taught me, we taught them, and we’re still around so we have to keep teaching it and I think that’s a really, really important part of pro wrestling that has to stay alive.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Shelley commented on Scott D’Amore’s firing from TNA. Fans can learn more here.

Shelley and Moose are set to clash over the TNA World Championship at TNA No Surrender. See the updated card for that show here.
