Sammy D Explains Why He Has Demanded Irish Opponents For The OTT World Championship
Sammy D explains why he has demanded Joe Carbray give him Irish opponents in the future.
Sammy D is looking to defend his OTT World Title against Irish opponents.
The OTT World Title has seen many challengers in the last few years, with only a select few getting the chance to call themselves champion. Sammy D of The Draw has currently held the championship for 330+ days and has defended against some of the top imports from the UK scene throughout his reign. However, at the Loco Rumble in January, Sammy took a microphone after his match with Flash Morgan Webster and demanded Irish opponents.
While speaking to Corey Brennan of Fightful in a recent interview, Sammy was asked why this was so significant to him. The champion would state that he wants the guys who are grinding in OTT and on the Irish scene to get their shot, not imports who show up ‘when it suits them’.
“I think everyone would agree that the Irish talent pool is mega and it’s grown and the lads coming out of the School of Irish Wrestling and other schools around the country is unbelievable. It took me an awful long time to get to the level of opportunity where you can compete for top championships and I want to give that opportunity to the lads who deserve it and are grinding and not people that are willy-nilly coming to OTT when it suits them. I think before Covid OTT was a different company in some ways. We relied an awful lot on imports and the power of having imports. But I mean, since COVID I think the Irish talent has really stood up and took it on themselves to be the backbone of OTT and Irish Wrestling. So to answer your question, I think there’s lots of lads there that deserve an opportunity. When I won the championship, I went out on a limb. I said I wanted Irish talent. I wanted a new era of OTT. Unfortunately, maybe Joe doesn’t see it that way, but I know an awful lot of Irish fans and Irish wrestlers see it that way.”
Sammy D is currently advertised for both night’s of OTT Gaff Party, where he will defend the championship first against Trent Seven in Wolverhampton on night one and then fellow Draw member Jay on night two in Dublin.
