Jay On Wrestling KENTA: I Feel So Lucky That I Could Share The Ring With A Legend Like That
Jay looks back on working with Kenta back at OTT’s 9th Anniversary.
Jay discusses his match with KENTA.
At OTT’s Ninth Anniversary last year, KENTA came to Dublin for a match with OTT’s resident Kingslayer, Jay. The bout was an incredibly physical match between the pair, with KENTA eventually scoring the win with a GTS. After the match, the two men would share a Too Sweet as Jay had earned his respect.
While speaking to Fightful’s Corey Brennan in a recent interview, Jay looked back on his match with Kenta, noting the change in his style that came after working with the former NOAH stalwart.
“Kenta is a legend and I had just gotten into that style of wrestling, I was always kind of a WWE and watching all the indie kind of wrestling stuff but then you go back and you watch some of that NOAH stuff and it’s just, that’s art. What they were doing to each other obviously, a lot of them are in not a bad way now but to learn from someone like that and to know that, we say this thing, it’s like you’re one wrestler removed from someone and right now I’m one wrestler removed from Kenta Kobashi, Misawa, Ring of Honor legends and just being in the ring, it was one of those moments where you’re like ‘oh my god I’m in here with Kenta, Kenta from NOAH’. Tt wasn’t even entering my mind that this could be like anything other than great. I think the chat with him after as well is just so, so valuable and getting feedback. That’s one thing like, you go to a million training classes and you could wrestle your mates a million times. When you’re in there with a legend, you just pick up on stuff that you don’t realize. Like I’ve kind of changed my style since that because i was so enamored with how he was doing everything and just how he had an iron grip on the crowd. It was just, it’s an experience that if you could ever do it, try it. But I feel so lucky that I could share the ring with a legend like that.”
Jay is currently set to challenge for the OTT World Championship at Night 2 of Gaff Party on March 2nd. You can read more about that here.
