Samoa Joe says his popular “nope” spot is a matter of common sense.
AEW World Champion Samoa Joe is known for his powerful strikes and his excellent submissions, but fans have also come to love his “nope” spot, in which he simply moves out of the way when an opponent dives at him. In November, the spot sparked some buzz, as Joe’s opponent looked at him with a clear look of confusion written all over his face as the powerhouse walked away.
Speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Samoa Joe explained his mindset about the “nope” spot.
“As a small youth in my younger days, if I saw something large or very destructive coming toward me, it was only natural to step aside. It’s not rocket science. The cavemen understood this, too. If you see a rock coming toward you from the top of the hill, move a little to the left,” Samoa Joe said.
In recent weeks, Joe has kicked off his reign as the AEW World Champion with a successful defense against HOOK, and he has dealt with the emergence of Swerve Strickland and “Hangman” Adam Page as his top contenders.
Fightful will have live coverage of AEW Dynamite as it airs on January 31.
