WWE 205 Live star Mustafa Ali made his SmackDown debut on the December 11, 2018, episode of SmackDown Live. Following a segment with WWE Champion Daniel Bryan, they clashed in a match. The next week, Ali pinned Bryan in a tag team match. WWE was seemingly building up a major bout between them, but the feud was dropped. Bryan went on to face Kofi Kingston at WrestleMania 35.
Speaking on Oh You Didn’t Know, Road Dogg, who was the lead writer of SmackDown at the time, was asked about Mustafa Ali and the report that Daniel Bryan was behind his push.
“I loved him. I loved him from the get-go. We spoke about him earlier briefly, when him and his guy started putting together some vignettes and stuff, they were good and creative that we started utilizing them on the show. He’s a talented kid, man, and he’s a good-looking dude, and he can work his arse off. So what’s not to love about Ali? Look, Daniel had his say-so, and Daniel had his say-so in his creativity, for sure, but I never remember Daniel coming to me anyway. He may have come to another writer or something, but I feel like it was me and two other guys that made the calls. So we liked the dude from the get-go,” Road Dogg said.
Road Dogg was also asked whether a match between Mustafa Ali and Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35 was the original plan. He stated that it was talked about. Road Dogg noted that there were talks about a storyline that would lead up to a match.
“Yeah, it was talked about. That’s probably what they’re referring, with Daniel Bryan talking about Ali and stuff. So yeah, there was talk about a storyline leading up to that,” he said.
