George Groves To Defend WBA Title In October In WBSS Quarterfinal Matchup

The World Boxing Super Series’ top-seeded super middleweight finally has a date for his first round matchup.

George Groves, the WBA “super” super middleweight champion will defend his title against Jamie Cox on October 14 at SSE Wembley Arena in London. That fight will be a quarterfinal fight with the winner facing the winner of the Juergen Braehmer vs. Rob Grant fight, which has yet to have a date and venue.

This will be Groves’ first defense of the title after defeating Fedor Chudinov earlier this year. Groves picked the undefeated Cox because Groves believed Cox was the easiest fight in the field of unseeded competitors.

“It’s a long tournament, so I picked the easy guy first,” Groves said when he first picked Cox at the Gala.

Below are the super middleweight matchups. Seedings are in parenthesis:

  • (1) George Groves (WBA “super” super middleweight champion) vs. Jamie Cox
  • (2) Callum Smith vs. Erik Skoglund
  • (3) Chris Eubank Jr. (IBO super middleweight champion) vs. Avni Yildirim
  • (4) Juergen Braehmer vs. Rob Brant

The only other fight for the World Boxing Super Series’s super middleweight tournament to have a date is Smith vs. Skoglund on September 16 in Liverpool. That fight will be for the special WBC diamond belt after Smith declined the opportunity to fight for the vacant WBC super middleweight title.

The cruiserweight tournament only has one fight scheduled which is scheduled is Mairis Briedis defending his WBC cruiserweight title against Mike Perez on September 30 in Latvia.
