Mariah May Recalls Trying Out For WWE When She Was Three Matches Into Her Career
Mariah May talks WWE’s interest in her over the years.
Despite only starting her career in 2019, Mariah May has already performed in promotions like STARDOM, AEW, Progress, Rev Pro, and CZW, making her one of the most accomplished young wrestlers in the business.
As it turns out, WWE has also held interest in May for quite some time now.
While speaking to Chris Jericho on the latest episode of Talk Is Jericho, May recalled doing a tryout for the company when she was only three matches into her career.
“Yeah, I did. I had a tryout with them. I had three matches and they asked me to do a tryout and I was like, ‘What?’. I thought it was for WWE, but I think it was actually for NXT UK, which is different, cause I’m not sure I would have ever signed there. With WWE, I would’ve signed early on because there is a PC and you’re gonna train and stuff. I had a tryout with them then and Sarah Stock gave me the advice to go and travel.”
May detailed some more information about her tryout before noting that the company reached out to her again after the COVID-19 lockdown.
“They knew about me before and they had spoken to me before and stuff and then NXT UK happened, and they’re like, come and try out for this. They said to travel more and they wanted me to get more experience because with NXT UK, they didn’t have a full-time PC, it was like once every two months. I had that, and it was before lockdown. Then after lockdown they reached out to me before I went to Japan actually, and I think whoever it was got fired or something like that.”
May stressed that she was set on going to Japan at that point, noting that she didn’t want to be stuck in a contract where she didn’t end up doing anything.
“I don’t want to be one of those people who gets signed for six years, doesn’t do anything and then leaves and I’m like angry because I didn’t get to do what I wanted.”
May is currently involved in a storyline with Toni Storm on AEW TV. The star has yet to wrestle for the company.
