Chris Jericho Says There Were Ideas For Zack Sabre Or Minoru Suzuki To Be In Don Callis Family For Street Fight
Chris Jericho reflects on some options that were considered for the recent eight man tag street fight on AEW Dynamite.
Chris Jericho recalls several competitors who were considered as replacements for the injured Sammy Guevara last month.
On the November 15th episode of AEW Dynamite, an eight man Like A Dragon street fight took place that was sponsored by Sega. In the bout, the team of Kota Ibushi, Chris Jericho, Paul Wight and Kenny Omega took on The Don Callis Family (Kyle Fletcher, Powerhouse Hobbs, Konosuke Takeshita and Brian Cage).
Cage was brought into the bout as a replacement for Sammy Guevara, who wasn’t cleared in time for the matchup as he had suffered a concussion. Guevara is still out with the injury, but at the time the injury but AEW in a tight spot as they looked for a replacement. Now, Chris Jericho says that there were other ideas before they settled on “The Machine” Brian Cage.
“The idea, at first, was to be Kota, Jericho, Kenny, and maybe somebody that would turn to join us. I don’t want to spoil that now, former partner of mine, who we were going to bring over to the good side, and that would be against the Don Callis family which would be Takeshita, Hobbs, Fletcher, and Sammy Guevara.
I just thought, if Hobbs is so big and so bad, who could we bring in that is on the roster that we haven’t done much with, and that would be Paul Wight. People were like, ‘Ah, Paul Wight blah blah blah.’ It was a one-shot thing for Paul to come back. Being the big man, who is bigger than Hobbs, and then he has other ideas and things he wants to do. I thought it was perfect. It really worked out great to have the match of the Golden Jets, Kenny and Jericho, and Kota Ibushi and Paul Wight against Don Callis Family. Sammy is still not cleared from his concussion, we’re hoping he is able to come back soon but in the meantime, we had some ideas, maybe get Zack Sabre or Jeff Cobb or Minoru Suzuki. We decided on Brian Cage, which I think was the best choice.” Jericho said while speaking on his Talk Is Jericho podcast about the bout.
In the end, Chris Jericho’s team would emerge the victors for the matchup after a hard fought battle in the matchup that included Kota Ibushi using a pipe on a bicycle.
On December 2nd, Jericho made a surprise appearance at an independent wrestling show in Vietnam. You can read more here.
