Rocky Romero Loved Tony Khan’s Sunglasses Promo On WWE, ‘It Was Like the Billionaire Ted Stuff’

On May 28, 2021, a sunglasses wearing Tony Khan took to social media to cut a promo on WWE and Nick Khan amid reports that WWE was trying to establish a working relationship with New Japan Pro-Wrestling.

The report came out as Tony had been featuring talent such as Yuji Nagata and Rocky Romero on AEW television. As history would show, AEW and NJPW would form a stronger bond and hold join pay-per-view events, while a relationship between WWE and NJPW was never established at that time.

Speaking to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, Romero was asked about his thoughts on Tony’s promo.

“It was great. I thought it was great. I think that that’s the kind of stuff that obviously people are attracted to. It’s like easy trolling stuff that definitely doesn’t hurt anybody, so it just gets people to talk about it. It’s like the old Billionaire Ted stuff that WWF used to do. I loved it. I thought it was great.

“I think he called me a couple of minutes before. He was like, ‘Hey, I’m thinking about doing this thing,’ he explained it really quick and I was like, ‘Oh, yeah. You should definitely do that. That sounds hilarious.’ It gets people talking, right? Everyone’s always on him about Twitter and stuff like that. I think he’s great. He’s a promoter. It’s the same thing that a Don King would do back in the day. He’s using social media as a tool to get people to talk about the product and tune in. I don’t think that there’s anything wrong with that at all.”

Tony previously revealed that he spoke to Nick Khan to explain the promo wasn’t personal.

Tony has dialed back his social media promos on WWE, but did use social media to take aim at WWE and NXT ahead of their head-to-head clash with AEW on October 10.

Elsewhere during the interview, Romero discussed CM Punk possibly coming to NJPW and how he thinks Tony Khan would react.
