Rey Mysterio On Winning WWE United States Championship: This Isn’t Mine, This Is The LWO’s Title

Rey Mysterio says the WWE United States Championship brings unity to the Latino World Order.

Rey Mysterio stepped up on behalf of Santos Escobar and defeated Austin Theory to capture the WWE United States Championship on the August 11 episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown. While the title shot was originally going to Santos Escobar, Theory did his best to take out his opponent throughout the night. Eventually, after Santos was attacked during his entrance, it was declared that he was not medically cleared to compete, and Mysterio took his place.

Now, Mysterio has stated that the title belongs to all members of the LWO, and it’s a symbol of their status as a family.

“Today was a roller coaster ride from the moment I arrived to the moment which is now. I was so angry, and my frustration and my anger took over that when I went out and had that match with Austin, I wasn’t really thinking about the final consequence, which is [being United States Champion]. My team, the LWO, this ain’t my title. This is our title. This is the LWO’s title,” Mysterio told Kayla Braxton on the SmackDown Lowdown on Peacock. “Oh my god, this is our unity right here. This is what unites us together. When you have guys like Austin Theory, which we all run across at some point in our lifetime, you have to put an end to that, and I think tonight was the perfect night to put an end to Austin Theory.”

This is Mysterio’s third reign with the WWE United States Championship and his first championship since being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023.
