Kurt Angle Says It Was Hard To Have Sting In Main Event Mafia Because He Was Such A Face
Kurt Angle reflects on the Main Event Mafia.
The Main Event Mafia was formed in 2008 in IMPACT Wrestling when Kurt Angle aligned himself with Kevin Nash, Booker T, and a recently turned Sting. The Mafia would later add Christian Cage and Scott Steiner.
Out of the early members, Sting was the first one to be booted from the group as other members, including the newly added Samoa Joe, disapproved of his leadership.
Speaking on The Kurt Angle Show, Kurt discussed the difficulties of having Sting in Main Event Mafia.
“It was just really hard to have Sting in that position because he’s such a babyface. He’s been a babyface his whole career, and him being in the Main Event Mafia, it was kind of putting a glitch in our computer because we were all heels, so we were running with it. When Sting would come out, the fans would cheer. It’s like, ‘Holy crap, how do we get this guy to be a heel? It’s impossible to make Sting a heel. That’s how good he was in his career, and that’s how popular he was,” he said.
Speaking about Joe replacing Sting, Angle said, “Yeah, it was time. We had Joe. We didn’t need Sting anymore, unfortunately. I think the whole idea was to even up the side. Sting had so much experience, 30 years of experience and the whole Main Event Mafia together, we had a combined 90 years of experience, and just knowing that Sting was gonna be on the babyface side kind of evened it up a little bit.”
Finally, Angle was asked if Jeff Jarrett would fit in MEM, “No, I don’t think so. I mean, it all depends, you know? Jeff would have been a good member of the Mafia, don’t get me wrong. Jeff is a great heel, but at this point in time, him being the owner of the company, the Mafia would be unstoppable. Having the owner of the company on your side? That’s a bit too much.”
Sting, Angle, and Joe would reform the Mafia for a brief period in 2013 to combat Bully Ray and Aces & Eights.
Elsewhere during the podcast, Angle had praise for Jeremy Borash. You can find his full comments by clicking here.
