Triumph Over Tragedy Foundation Offering To Help Matt Hughes

It has been several days since former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes was seriously injured when a train collided with his truck.

Hughes, who has yet to awaken since the accident, is currently being treated at the HSHS St. Johns Hospital in Illinois. However, the Triumph Over Tragedy Foundation (TOTF), of which Hughes is a member, has offered to help the former fighter in any way they can.

TOTF Founder Reggie Jones issued the following statement to MMA Junkie about Hughes situation:

“Matt has sat on Triumph Over Tragedy’s board for five years. TOTF serves families affected by spinal cord and brain injuries. The Hughes family is working closely with the foundation on the next steps with Matt’s care including having him evaluated by one of the country’s top traumatic brain injury centers. The family is taking Matt’s situation day by day and asks his fans and colleagues to continue to lift them up in prayer.”

The mission of TOTF is to “support the family unit through biblical principles from the initial impact of a tragedy of illness.”

Jones, through the foundation, has also offered the Hughes Family the opportunity to transfer the former welterweight champion to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia. This is a facility that specializes in traumatic brain injuries, amongst other things.

Illinois State Police information officer Jason Bradley says that they are still waiting for toxicology results and other information as they attempt to figure out just how the whole situation went down.

“If he obviously is in a position where they think he’s going to pull through, the investigation will continue, because they’re going to want to interview him,” Bradley said. “They’re going to go back and recreate everything they can up to that point. They’re going to wait for toxicology tests to come back. There really is no time frame, because a lot of times, a majority of the investigation will be completed, but they’re waiting on one thing before they can close it.”

Fightful will continue to provide updates on Matt Hughes as they become available.
