Carl Frampton To Fight In WBC Featherweight Title Eliminator In July
Former featherweight world champion Carl Frampton is getting another shot to fight for a world title.
Cyclone Promotions announced that Frampton will be facing Andres Gutierrez in a WBC featherweight title eliminator on July 29
"I'm delighted to be boxing at home," Frampton said. "I believe that I perform best when I fight in Belfast and it was important for me to give the home fans another big Belfast fight. Gutierrez is one of the best in the world at my weight and this is the kind of test I wanted. He comes forward and is aggressive so I believe it's going to be a great fight."
Frampton, a former unified super bantamweight and featherweight champion, wrapped up a series against Leo Santa Cruz for the WBA featherweight title. Frampton won the first fight back on July 30, 2016, but lost the title, and his first pro fight, in a January 28 rematch. The fight against Gutierrez, which will take place in Frampton's native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, will be Framption's first fight in Belfast since stopping Chris Avalos in the fifth round to retain his IBF super bantamweight title in 2015.
No other fights has been announced for the undercard. The current WBC featherweight champion is Gary Russell Jr., who recently retained his title after a seventh-round stoppage win over Oscar Escandon last month.
Gutierrez is a former WBC FECARBOX featherweight champion and is coming off a win against previously unbeaten Wallington Orobio last October.
