Roman Gonzalez vs. Srisaket Sor Rungvisai Rematch Set For September 9
Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez’s much anticipated rematch against Srisaket Sor Rungvisai has a date and television network home.
According to RingTV.com, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions said Gonzalez vs. Sor Rungvisai will take place on September 9 on an HBO-televised card, one week before HB is set to broadcast the megafight between Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez. The site of the fight is more than likely to be Los Angeles, but has not been finalized. HBO is holding a card at the StubHub Center for Miguel Cotto vs. Yoshihiro Kamegai, but that site, as well as The Forum, are both occupied on September 9 with events.
“I think it was a great fight the first time, Srisaket rose to the occasion,” Loeffler said. “It was controversial where many people thought Chocolatito did enough to retain his title, but that’s why the WBC ordered a rematch. (It’s) one of those fights fans are looking forward to seeing again. The great thing about the (junior bantamweight) division is that there’s so many great fighters at the top, interchangeably, and it should provide a lot of matchups for the division.”
Gonzalez lost his WBC super flyweight title, and his undefeated boxing record, to Sor Rungvisai on the undercard of Golovkin vs. Daniel Jacobs back on March 18.
Another fight in the works for the HBO card would be Carlos Cuadras vs. Juan Francisco Estrada for the WBC interim super flyweight title as well as a fight involving WBO super flyweight champion Naoya Inoue.
