Triple H Explains Why Kevin Owens And Sami Zayn vs. The Usos Closed WrestleMania 39 Night One
Leading up to WrestleMania 39 fans wondered which bout would headline night one with The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) vs. Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens and Rhea Ripley vs. Charlotte Flair being considered for the spot.
Though Ripley won the women’s Royal Rumble and Charlotte is the most decorated female in WWE history, the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Title bout got the nod to close the show as it was the culmination of a year-long story between the Usos and Zayn.
Speaking at the WrestleMania 39 press conference, Triple H explained why he tabbed the bout to be the main event.
“It’s all about what is most impactful. As the storylines played out heading into WrestleMania, to me, it was the most emotionally and storyline driven match on the card. I felt like that needed to be in that spot. I’ve said this before when we’ve talked about, ‘Oh, you put the women in the main event.’ We didn’t put the women in the main event, that’s the spot. That’s the storyline that was driving things to put them in that role. It’s not about giving it to them because they’re women. Never once did it factor for me. People saying, ‘Tag team championships haven’t been in that spot. History making.’ I didn’t even know that, to be honest with you. Talent are talent, nothing else to it. Whatever storyline is resonating the most and has the most impact, that needs to be the story that’s told. In this case, it was the Usos, Kevin, and Sami,” he said.
Both stories concluded with new champions as Ripley defeated Flair to win the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship while Owens & Zayn won the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships.
