Matt Cardona On His Pairing With Steph De Lander: I’ve Found My ‘Sensational Sherri’
Matt Cardona says he has found his Sensational Sherri in Steph De Lander.
Matt Cardona, alongside his wife, Chelsea Green, reinvented himself on the independent scene. However, Chelsea Green is now back in WWE, and while Cardona is happy for his wife, his time on the independent circuit is not finished just yet. He has found a new heater in Steph De Lander, the former Persia Pirotta.
Speaking on Casual Conversations with The Wrestling Classic, Cardona explains how he views this switch as being similar to when “Macho Man” Randy Savage switched from Miss Elizabeth to Sensational Sherri in 1989.
“Now that my Elizabeth has gone on to WWE, I’ve found my Sensational Sherri in Steph De Lander,” said the former Zack Ryder. “When Chelsea left, I knew I needed somebody. First of all, you can never replace Chelsea, especially since she’s my goddamn wife, but I knew I needed something, I knew I needed someone, and I knew I needed a girl. I’m not going to say I was looking everywhere, but I was keeping my eye open for somebody. I was just in Australia for World Series Wrestling.
“I saw Steph De Lander and said, ‘Holy shit.’ This girl is 6 ft tall, she can kick my fucking ass, she’s got piercings all over her face, so I’m like, ‘Hey, Chelsea, do you mind if I ask this girl if she wants to be my heater?’ Once she said yes, when Chelsea gave me the green light, I brought it up to Steph, and then we did Australia, she came and helped me and Brian Myers. We did GCW, we just did the ECW Arena, and we’ve got more bookings coming up, so we’re going to run with that for a while,” he added.
In the past, Cardona has spoken about a return to WWE for himself, saying that he would like to return under his own name, believing the Zack Ryder character to be dead.
Cardona recently tried to trademark his WWE ring name but to no avail. Fans can read his comments about that at this link.
