Oscar De La Hoya Expects GGG vs. Canelo To Sell “Close To 3 Million” PPV Buys
Oscar De La Hoya has high hopes that Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez will do huge pay-per-view numbers.
De La Hoya recently talked with FightHub TV and said 2017 is a banner year for the sport with the meteoric rise of unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, record viewership for Keith Thurman vs. Danny Garcia and expects Golovkin vs. Alvarez to have close to 3 million pay-per-view buys.
“With the heavyweight division being back with Anthony Joshua, you know with the Keith Thurman fight that was viewed by what, more that 5 million people on prime time TV, with Canelo-Chavez selling over a million homes. We’re expecting close to 3 million with Golovkin and Canelo in September,” De La Hoya said. “These are the types of fights that bring boxing back, and that’s exactly my mission is to bring boxing back, bring back that excitement that people used to live for when watching boxing. So little by little we’re chipping that block and hopefully making it happen.”
The venue is still not decided for the September 16 megafight. There were originally four possibilities for venues: AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Madison Square Garden in New York City, T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. As reported by Fightful, AT&T Stadium and T-Mobile Arena are the two favorites to land te fight.
De La Hoya confirmed that those two venues are the top two for consideration and says a decision will come soon and that it is what the fans ultimately want that might be the deciding factor in choosing a venue.
“What was that movie? ‘Show me the money!’ No, no, it’s all about where the fans want it,” De La Hoya said. “I mean, look, we’ve been having polls on ESPN and all over on the web,on the internet, and it’s all about where the fans want it and a lot of fans are saying they want it in Dallas. It’s almost split right down the middle. A lot of people want it in Vegas because of the whole excitement and Vegas and the lights and action and so I have my work cut out but I’m sure I’ll decide on the perfect place for this fight.”
