The New Day Want To Win And Then Defend A Singles Title Via “The Freebird Rule”

One of the things that made the New Day standout as a tag team is that there were three of them.

Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods.

And when they defended their Tag Titles in either of their two reigns, you never knew which two of them were going to step into the ring.

In a move made famous by The Fabulous Freebirds–so famous, in fact, that it wound up being named after them–any two members of the faction were allowed to represent the team in defending the championship belts.

It is now known in wrestling parlance as "Freebirding."

But now that they're on their way to SmackDown after the Superstar Shakeup, and are currently not involved in any tag team storylines, the New Day have an idea for how they might make an impact on the blue brand, as well as make a little history.

They want to "Freebird" a singles title.

Yes, really.

And yes, to answer your next question, that IS the greatest idea ever.

Here's what E and Kofi told Sportskeeda:

Big E: You never know.

Kofi: You never know. The thing about singles titles is when one of us is champion, we are all champions. So it’s in the cards. There’s a lot of championship titles out there that need to be won and we like winning. So, we’ll see. Like I always say, you never know what’s gonna happen.

Big E: It’s true. And I think it would be fresh. I think to have a trio ‘Freebird’ a singles title. That would be cool. It's something we've talked about many times, and we're ready to shake things up.

When Kevin Owens and AJ Styles finally, rightfully move back into the Main Event picture and are focused on the WWE Title, I can't think of a better way to give life to the US Title than with the New Day coming down to the ring and drawing straws to see which one of them gets to issue the US Open Challenge this week.

Admit it, you're smiling already just thinking about it.
