Boxing News: Dawejko-Woods set for Oct 7

Following a fourth-round knockout in his Parx Casino debut on September 1, 2022, Philadelphia boxer Joey Dawejko (22-10-4, 13 KOs) is slated to face Terrell Jamal Woods of Forrest City, AR at Parx Casino on Friday, October 7.

Dawejko was semi-retired and had started a roofing firm, but he still craved a fight. On September 1, his left hook looked excellent; it was old Joey Dawejko. Dawejko seemed to be rejuvenated after not having to work long hours as a roofer. Dawejko possesses strong hands and the passion of a warrior.

D’Angelo Fuentes of Coconut Creek, FL, will fight for the second time in the Philadelphia region.

He looked impressive in his previous bout, a unanimous decision win in Philadelphia on February 24. Fuentes recently participated on the undercard of Teofimo Lopez vs. Pedro Campa in Las Vegas on August 13.

Fuentes will compete in a six-round featherweight battle against an opponent yet to be announced.

Daiyaan Butt of Philadelphia, PA, will make a quick turnaround after winning at Parx Casino. Butt will seek to keep his unbeaten record intact when he battles in a six-round super lightweight contest against an opponent to be revealed at Parx Casino.

Brendan O’Callaghan of Philadelphia, PA, will also compete in a four-round super welterweight contest against an opponent who is yet to be announced.

Soslan Alborov of Philadelphia, PA, will compete in a four-round super welterweight fight against an opponent to be named.

Hakim Smith of Philadelphia, PA, will face Boris Nbe of Harrisburg, PA, in a four-round super lightweight contest. For the above, and many other bouts to follow, PA’s Borgata online casino will have betting opportunities for boxing fans, in addition to their wide selection of online games.

Usyk vs Fury can happen this year

Meanwhile, according to Usyk’s management team, Usyk versus Fury might happen soon, as Anthony Joshua discussions have been thrown into disarray.

According to Egis Klimas, Oleksandr Usyk is eager to fight Tyson Fury this year, providing the most definitive hint yet that an undisputed heavyweight bout is likely.

Despite Usyk’s vow to avoid the ring until 2023, Klimas believes the heavyweight champion will return sooner.

Shakur Stevenson, Robson Conceicao Hit Newark

Shakur Stevenson, the WBC/WBO junior lightweight world champion, has never fought as a world champion in his home country. The six letters — Newark — on the front of his trunks signify his history and imminent future.

On Friday evening at Prudential Center, Stevenson, a 2016 Olympic silver medallist, will defend his titles against Brazilian Olympic gold medalist Robson Conceicao. He had previously fought at Prudential Center. In his last fight, he beat Alberto Guevara in July 2019 before capturing the WBO featherweight world championship the following October.

On the other hand, a world championship homecoming is a bit different. Stevenson began fight week Tuesday afternoon at the Boylan Street Recreation Center, where he spoke with several dozen local youngsters and was greeted by Councilwoman LaMonica McIver and other Newark and local area leaders. Stevenson began his training at Boylan as a child and makes it a point to visit.

Conceicao had had a hero’s welcome earlier that day at Mantena Global Care, a Newark-based charity that supports the city’s Latino community. The Ironbound section in Newark has one of the country’s largest Brazilian communities. Many local dignitaries were present to support Conceicao, including East Ward Council Member Michael J. Silva.
