UFC On ABC 3 Highlights: Ortega vs. Rodriguez Ends Disappointingly

An entertaining UFC on ABC card felt like it was all for naught as the main event ended suddenly after a shoulder injury to Brian Ortega. The rest of the card was good though, so check out the rest of the highlights after the break.

Yair Rodriguez def. Brian Ortega via TKO (Shoulder Injury) (Rd. 1 4:11)

In a massive disappointment, a fight that seemed like it was sure to be entertaining was ended early when Brian Ortega suffered a shoulder injury when trying to escape from an arm-bar attempt from Yair Rodriguez. Not much else to say, since the fight never got out of first gear. Unfortunate.

Amanda Lemos def. Michelle Waterson-Gomez via Submission (Guillotine Choke) (Rd. 2 1:48)

After a quick submission loss in her last bout, Amanda Lemos bounced back in a big way securing a beautiful guillotine choke against Michelle Wasterson-Gomez. A major win that ensures Lemos remains in the top end of the strawweight division.

Li Jingliang def. Muslim Salikov via TKO (Punches) (Rd. 2 4:38)

Li Jingliang managed to survive the spinning attacks from Muslim Salikov and turned the fight around during the second round, and got the finish with an impressive 1-2 combination to get the victory over Salikov. A good bounce back performance by “The Leech” after underwhelming last time out vs. Khamzat Chimaev.

Matt Schnell def. Su Mudaerji via Technical Submission (Triangle Choke) (Rd. 2 4:24)

In an absolutely incredible bout, Matt Schnell and Su Mudaerji went to war and emerged with a fight of the year candidate, and especially a round of the year candidate in round two. I can’t believe Schnell wasn’t knocked out, or even knocked down by the elbows Mudaerji was landing, but he was able to get a knock down, and then put Mudaerji to sleep and get the technical submission.  An absolutely must-watch fight.

Shane Burgos def. Charles Jourdain via Majority Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-28)

In a back and forth fight Shane Burgos emerged with the decision victory over Charles Jourdain. Jourdain did much more damage in the fight, and under different scoring systems would’ve earned the decision, but Burgos did enough to edge out two of the decisions.

Lauren Murphy def. Miesha Tate via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

The slide of former champion Miesha Tate continues, as she was both outstruck, and more concerningly out grappled by Lauren Murphy. Tough times for the likely hall of famer, but its tough to see where she goes from this.

Punehele Soriano def. Dalcha Lungiambula via KO (Punches) (Rd. 2 0:28)

Punehele Soriano scored a heavy knockout victory over Dalcha Lungiambula in the featured prelim, and then proceeded to pour his heart out, crying during the post-fight speech.

Ricky Simon def. Jack Shore via Submission (Arm-Triangle Choke) (Rd. 2 3:28)

In a battle of ranked bantamweights, Ricky Simon gave Jack Shore his first loss with a second round submission victory. While Shore looked strong in the first round, Simon showed his trademark heart and grit and came out in the second round looking incredibly strong and was able to knock the talented Welshman from the ranks of the undefeated.

Bill Algeo def. Herbert Burns via TKO (Knee Injury) (Rd. 2 1:50)

Herbert Burns came out like a house of fire, and secured a very deep triangle choke and transitioned into an arm-bar attempt. Bill Algeo was able to survive, and then take advantage of an obviously gassed Burns. Great comeback from Algeo.

Dustin Jacoby def. Da Un Jung via KO (Punch) (Rd. 1 3:13)

Dustin Jacoby continues his march into the light heavyweight rankings with a heavy first round KO victory over Da Un Jung. Jacoby shut out Jung’s lights with a 1-2 combination, that seemed to wake up Jung when he hit the ground. Good showing for Jacoby, and he demands to get a bigger name in his next bout.

Dustin Stoltzfus def. Dwight Grant via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

In a very unremarkable fight, Dustin Stoltzfus edged out a decision over Dwight Grant. Stoltzfus outpaced and out struck Grant, in what will probably be the last we see from Grant in the UFC as he has now dropped three straight, and four of his last five.

Emily Ducote def. Jessica Penne via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

This fight was on too early, and I didn’t realize it had started, so I can’t tell you what happened.
