Sonny Kiss Clarifies ‘Push LGBTQ Athletes’ Comment, Wants The Push To Be On Merit
In a recent interview with Hollywood Life, Sonny Kiss said, “I would like to see all LGBTQ+ professional athletes (signed and unsigned) to keep being seen as sellable and pushed into the mainstream outlets all year round and not just during Pride Month.”
Some fans took Sonny’s words to mean that LGBTQ athletes should be pushed all year because they are LGBTQ, but speaking on Busted Open Radio, Sonny made sure to clarify that the push should be based on merit.
“I said something on another podcast, I said, ‘I think LGBTQ athletes should be pushed all year round,’ and I think it got twisted into me saying ‘people should be pushed because they are LGBTQ ‘ instead of based on their merit. There are a lot of people, workers in AEW, WWE, all over that are killing it. the Indies has a myriad of amazing LGBTQ workers. I’m saying we should be booked all year round because of we are talented and can go in the ring and we just happen to be LGBTQ and not being used just for the Pride month only,” said Sonny.
Kiss has made regular appearances on AEW Dark, but hasn’t wrestled on Dynamite or Rampage since a 26 second loss to Kenny Omega in October 2020.
When it was mentioned by host Dave LeGreca that he would like to see more of Sonny on TV, Sonny replied, “Yes, me too. I’ve been continuing to work really hard and get better in the ring and keep pushing. It’s wrestling, not everything is going to go your way. It’s your attitude and how you go about it. I’m grateful to Tony Khan for giving me an opportunity and allowing me to be who I am and not wanting to change me. There are other companies who said they didn’t know what to do with me and TK said, ‘Hold my beer.’ That’s a wonderful thing and I’m grateful for that.”
Sonny said that matches against Malakai Black, Jungle Boy, and Scorpio Sky were appealing, but wants to work with anyone in the company and be part of a good story.
Fightful will have live coverage of AEW Dynamite beginning at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
