Randy Orton: If It Wasn’t For Cody Rhodes Being My Babysitter After The Shows, I May Not Be Here

Randy Orton says that for as much as Cody Rhodes has put him over as a mentor, Orton also owes Cody a debt of gratitude for his friendship and care during their time together in WWE.

Cody Rhodes debuted on WWE television at the age of 21 and immediately, he was thrown into a program with Randy Orton as part of his father, Dusty Rhodes’ final pay-per-view program where he faced Randy Orton in a Texas Bull Rope Match at the Great American Bash in 2007. eventually, Cody and Randy would be put together in 2008 as part of Legacy. Cody has fond memories of those days and credits Randy Orton as a mentor but Randy, while talking to Inside the Ropes during the most recent WWE tour of the United Kingdom, says that he owes Cody Rhodes for helping provide some stability in his life for a good three year period.

“Cody, he was young, but I was still young when he came up, and I was still kind of in a period of time where I needed a babysitter,” said Randy. “So as much as he puts me over for taking him under my wing when he was brand new, and drove me around town to town like he was a good — Cody, probably, is responsible for getting me town to town safely for a good three years of my career. If it wasn’t for him, I might not be here right now. Like, he was my babysitter after the show.”

As for any fun stories of the two sharing wild times on the road, Randy Orton says that he will hold off on sharing those until everyone’s kids have grown up but one day, there will be a book that could have a chapter on all of the fun things that Cody Rhodes did while on the road.

“As far as stories, man, we had a lot of wild fun nights going out with the boys and shit. But that was like a lifetime ago. You know, we’re both married now with kids. There’s no reason I bring up all those old memories. Maybe when my kids are grown, his kids are grown, you know, a book is in order. There could be a chapter on all the funny shit Cody did. For sure,” said Randy.

Randy Orton once captured the WWE Title in a six-man tag team match alongside Cody Rhodes at Backlash 2009. 13 years later, Randy is in a similar position as he will team with Drew McIntyre and Matt Riddle at WrestleMania Backlash against Roman Reigns and The Usos, The Bloodline. Learn more here.
